Our Heritage
Our Heritage traces the history of Pasir Ris Secondary School from its establishment in 1985 as the first secondary school in Tampines New Town. It highlights the school’s growth, its grounding in the values of Pride and Responsibility, and its continuing commitment to holistic education and student development.
Our School Journey
Pasir Ris Secondary School opened on 2 January 1985 as the first secondary school in Tampines. It began with eleven Secondary One classes and sixteen teachers, operating temporarily from Chongzheng Primary School. Four months later, the school moved to its present site along Tampines Street 21. This move marked an important milestone in the school’s journey within Singapore’s education landscape.
On 20 August 1987, the Senior Parliamentary Secretary (Defence) and Member of Parliament for Tampines, Mr Phua Bah Lee, officially opened the school. The founding principal, Ms Bandara, together with several staff members, crafted the school motto, Pride and Responsibility, with the aim of instilling these values in every Pasirian as they pursue success and excellence.
In 1997, a building extension project commenced immediately after the GCE ‘O’ Level examinations to provide additional classrooms in preparation for the school's transition to single-session operations in 2000. The school officially began single-session operations on 2 January 2000 with thirty-nine classes. As the school’s enrolment grew, it underwent upgrading under the Programme for Rebuilding and IMproving Existing Schools (PRIME) from January 2006 to December 2007. The upgrading provided additional classrooms and facilities to support its growing student population and learning needs.
The school officially moved back to its current location in January 2008. The enhanced facilities and opportunities enabled the school to strengthen its pedagogical practices and co-curricular programmes, taking the school to greater heights. Over the decades, the school has achieved numerous accolades and significant milestones, including the Academic Value-Added Award and the Sustained Achievement Awards in Aesthetics, Sports, and Uniformed Groups.
Today, Pasir Ris Secondary School has established a strong presence in the community and is recognised for its nurturing and caring staff, effective curricular programmes, and engaging co-curricular activities. The school has come a long way since 1985 and remains committed to providing quality education and a supportive environment for every student to grow and succeed in a rapidly changing world.
